Waltham, MA (September 3, 2002) – Putting new market numbers to a well-publicized theme, research firm Kinetic Information today predicted the revenue opportunity associated with enterprise interoperability (EIO) – “getting systems to work together” – will be $62.7 billion in 2006, nearly five times what it is today. According to the firm, the market for EIO will experience “convergence with a vengeance” as customers increasingly buy enabling technologies like integration tools, portals, workflow, and business process management in combination, rather than individually. The resulting “converged solutions,” the company says, will account for 56% of the overall market in 2006, up from 23% today. [See figure below.]

“It’s counter-intuitive to unify an infrastructure with multiple technologies that themselves must be woven together,” says Kinetic Information president Steve Weissman. “What customers really want are well-orchestrated functional packages that can solve their problem without first making it worse.” Weissman cites BPM/workflow and portals/integration tools as examples of combinations he expects will soon capture the market’s imagination.

A new report from Kinetic Information describes EIO as “a problem that touches all industries, all departments, and all levels of manage-ment, [and] can’t be addressed as a line item on one divisional budget.” Instead, it writes, “there is one budget for EIO – the corporate budget for IT – and very soon there will be one market.”
